Photographer and Film Maker Volunteers

Photographs, films and documentaries of the Andean bear in the wild are very hard to find.  We don't even have much high resolution film footage or photographs of the Andean Bear Project, captive bears in rehabilitation or the human aspects of our work.  We need volunteer filmmakers and photographers to help us develop an image bank of spectacled (Andean) bear photos and films in order to publicise the bears' plight in the hope of saving them.  You need some experience in wildlife photography or filmmaking.
Take a look at our bear photos and videos.  Could you do better?  If so, please get in touch.  As you can see, we have mostly low-resolution photos and videos, taken from a distance.
Volunteer photographers will need to have (or rent) good quality camera equipment with a powerful zoom lens.  Wildlife photography is difficult at the best of times, and the Andean bear is timid, has an excellent sense of smell and lives mostly in remote, inaccessible terrain.  Photographers are unlikely to get close to a spectacled bear, it will be a case of getting the best possible photos from a distance, as it is with most wildlife.  We will do what we can to give you a chance of photographing Andean bears, you will need to have the camera equipment, experience and skill to make the most of the opportunity.
Filmmaking volunteers will also need to bring their own video camera and film equipment suitable for filming bears from a distance.  Wildlife filming or documentary-making experience is necessary.  As well as film of bears in the wild and perhaps in captivity too, we are also interested in film footage or documentaries showing all aspects of our work.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an aspiring wildlife filmmaker or photographer to make their name and add to their portfolio.  If you can get the shots we need, we will definitely promote them, and your name will be on them!   What we can arrange for you will depend on when you are here and what is happening at the time, but we would hope to take you to the páramo as well as the cloud forest, and hopefully arrange special access for you film or photo captive bears.
We are currently unable to accept applications for volunteer filmmakers and photographers.  When this situation changes, information will be posted on the Volunteer Opportunities page.
